When completed in 1913, the 134-MW Keokuk hydropower plant was considered an engineering marvel. The project was the largest in the world at the time and recently celebrated its 100th year of operation.
Keokuk Hydroelectric Plant. Located in Keokuk, Iowa, the Keokuk Hydroelectric Plant celebrated it's centennial in June of this year. Marking 100 years of continuous operation. After only two and a half years of construction completed in 1913, the Keokuk hydroelectric plant was built to harness the hydropower potential of the Mississippi river. Between Keokuk, Iowa and Hamilton, Illinois. The original construction cost 25 million dollars. Which today, would equate to more than 588 million dollars. At the time, it was a first for the hydro industry in many ways. And as a result, was an amazing accomplishment. When completed in 1913, it was the largest hydro power project in the world. With a total capacity of 125 megawatts. The [UNKNOWN] plant was connected to the longest monolithic concrete dam at the time. With the largest privately financed construction project, had the largest turbine ever built, with the heaviest rotating weight suspended on a single bearing, and had the largest inland dry dock at the time. Also, the the first long distance power transmission line. High voltage transformers and high voltage insulators were used at this plant. At this time, it was one of only two sites in North America generating 25 cycle power. Using 9 of the 15 total generators housed in the facility. The plan is know for its pristine interior and attention to detail, as well as being a site originally surveyed by US army engineer Robert E. Lee. In the 1850s, the plane currently has 15 generating units with the total capacity of 134 megawatts. Plant owner Anne Marrane invited the communities to Keekook, Iowa and Hamilton, Illinois to celebrate the centennial in June. Be sure to send your congratulations along as well.
