  1. India commissions hydro turbine in sewerage plant’s effluent pipe

A hydropower plant has been commissioned at Chilla in East Delhi, India, which consists of a turbine propelled by effluent from a sewerage treatment plant. The generating capacity of this unit was not disclosed. The plant was commissioned by Delhi Jal Board. Treated effluent at the company’s 9 MGD Sewage Treatment Plant falls through a total height of 4.8 meters, and the new turbine  is expected to produce 20,000 kWh of electricity annually. Delhi Jal Board says this is the first hydropower plant in New Dehli . A press release dated Aug. 23 says, “It is a pilot project which has been set up free of cost. The use of fossil fuels leads to the generation of carbon dioxide, which in turn leads to greenhouse gas effect and global warming. However, no fossil fuel is being used in the generation of the power through hydropower at Chilla, therefore this technology is termed as ‘pollution free technology.’ “ The electricity generated is being used by the sewerage treatment plant, owned and operated by Delhi Jal Board. Delhi Jal Board is responsible for the production and distribution of potable water after treating raw water from various sources, as well as providing treatment and disposal of waste water. The board is looking at the possibility of replicating this “green power generation” at its other sewerage treatment plants as well. For more small hydro news, click here .
