    The Sunkoshi landslide

    08/16/2014

    KAPIL DHITAL

Incidents may be positive or negative changing the life of people or communities overnight. Such an incident happened at 'Jure, Sindhupalchowk, early Saturday morning on August 2. Massive rock masses fell from the mountain which completely blocked the Sunkoshi River and created a dam. The 45 m high and 450 m wide dam not only destroyed houses and killed people and livestock but also submerged 2.5 km backwater with many houses, a major part of the Araniko Highway along with the Sunkoshi small hydropower project (2.5 MW) powerhouse.

There were indications that such a devastating landslide could occur. The place was geologically unstable and was vulnerable to landslide and was blocking the highway in the past. The water which used to run over the mountain making waterfalls has disappeared this year. This clearly indicates the water was flowing inside the rocks causing internal erosion. I visited Jure on Friday and felt the mountain would fall any time causing further destruction.
