U.S. seeks replacement turbine design for 2,078-MW Hoover


The Bureau of Reclamation seeks information on the capability of small businesses to design and supply a replacement turbine, with an option to supply three more, at 2,078-MW Hoover Dam on the Colorado River in Arizona and Nevada. Responses are due Nov. 13, 2009.

BuRec began overhaul work on Hoover Dam turbines in 1998. (Hydro Review, September 2009) Most recently, the agency sought bids to apply protective coatings to turbine-generators and dam equipment. (HydroWorld 8/31/09)

BuRec issued a sources sought notice to determine whether small businesses have the capability to perform computational fluid dynamics, design, physical modeling, hydraulic turbine manufacturing, and supply of one turbine for Hoover Unit N8, including runner cones, coupling bolts, and design of a draft tube throat liner. It proposes an option for manufacture of three more turbines for Units A1, N5, and N6.

Estimated value of the contract is between $5 million and $20 million over four years.

The sources sought announcement may be obtained from the Federal Business Opportunities Internet site, www.fbo.gov, by entering Solicitation No. 10-003 in the “Keyword/Solicitation #” box. Prospective bidders must register at the Central Contractor Registration database, www.ccr.gov, and the On-line Representations and Certification system, http://orca.bpn.gov.
