The government of Niger invites expressions of interest from consultants for three contracts involving social and economic relocation of residents in the area of the proposed 125-MW Kandadji Dam on the Niger River. Responses to three solicitations are due November 25, 2009.
The African Development Bank Group has agreed to help finance the Kandadji Ecosystems Regeneration and Niger Valley Development Program, which includes construction of Kandadji Dam. Financing for the hydropower station is due to come from a public-private partnership.
The government recruited contractors in February for civil construction and hydro-mechanical equipment. (HydroWorld 12/1/08) The project includes construction of a dam for regulating the flow of the Niger River in order to provide the water needed for irrigation, drinking water, sanitation, ecology, grazing, and fisheries. About 629 gigawatt-hours is to be generated annually to make the structure as profitable as possible.
The agriculture development ministry issued three invitations for expressions of interest from consultants to:
o Develop an action plan for relocation and rehabilitation of people in the zone affected by project construction, and a plan to manage the influx of workers and the social effects;
o Develop an information management plan including a database to support relocation and rehabilitation activity;
o Develop an urban relocation plan for relocation of the city of Ayorou.
Expressions of interest and qualifications for each solicitation are due by noon November 25.
