Hydro project approved for Amazon region


Brazil’s environmental department, Ibama, has granted authorization for construction to begin on a hydroelectric project on the Jari River in the Amazonian region, news reports state.

The Santo Antonio do Jari hydroelectric project will have a capacity of 300 MW, and energy generated from the plant will go mostly to the region’s pulp manufacturers.

ECE Participacoes will develop the project along with Jari Energetica.

ECE Participacoes is the primary shareholder in the project, and Jari Energetica is a subsidiary of the Orsa Group, which owns the Jari Celulose pulp plant.
