RWE and Northumbrian Water plan hydroelectric project

RWE npower renewables has signed an agreement with Northumbrian Water to develop a 750-KW hydro project at Northumbrian Water’s Selset Reservoir in Northeast England’s Tees Valley.

Work on the US$4 million Selset hydropower project will begin in early 2010 and will require integration with the existing water supply operations, improvements on an access road and construction of a powerhouse, Northumbrian Water and RWE reported.

The project will generate enough electricity to meet the average annual needs of about 1,000 households, and the power generated will be fed into the national grid.

The project will add to Northumbrian Water’s hydro plant at Kielder Water, Northern Europe’s largest man-made reservoir, which is also operated in partnership with RWE npower renewables.
