The Nam Theun 2 hydropower project in Laos has begun commercial export of 1,000 megawatts of electricity to Thailand, the hydro project's operators reported.
The $1.45 billion project is co-owned by Electricite de France, the Lao government, the Electricity Generating Public Co. of Thailand and Italian-Thai Development.
Initially, the plant was expected to begin commercial operations by the end of 2009. But engineering problems delayed the project’s opening.
State-run Nam Theun 2 Power Company has a 25-year concession as owner of the project, during which time the Lao government will accrue royalties, dividends and taxes estimated at more than US$2 billion.
