Voith Hydro's Mutriku wave energy project earns honors


INVERNESS, Scotland 1/5/12 (PennWell) -- Voith Hydro Wavegen recently received an award from the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI) for its wave power plant in Mutriku, Spain.

The 16-turbine, 300-kW facility is housed within the breakwater of the northern Spanish port and was officially turned over to utility company Ente Vasco de la Energia on Nov. 22.

The project was named SCDI's Outstanding International Achievement in Green Energy. According to SCDI's website, the award is given to organizations and businesses that are, "that are demonstrating leadership, refocusing their resources and energies and investing to grow and develop in international markets."

Voith CEO and president Kevin Frank discussed the potential for ocean power with HydroWorld in November 2010.
