Perspectives: Brewpubs, Monkey Business, and Regulatory Efficiency

Looking at the title of this month's column, you may think you are reading the wrong magazine. When have you EVER used the words brewpubs, monkey business, and regulatory efficiency to describe hydropower?!

Well, you're about to find out!

As the flagship media sponsor of HydroVision International, Hydro Review … specifically the editorial team … is responsible for planning the general sessions of the event, including the keynote and the closing luncheon. For the speakers at these two sessions, I challenged the team to recruit high-level political figures. I wanted the thousands of hydro professionals attending the largest hydro event in the world to hear viewpoints and perspectives about hydro from policy makers and influencers.

The lineup the editorial team, led by Senior Editor Elizabeth Ingram, has secured is … in a word … stellar:

• a state governor
• a former U.S. Senator (as well as presidential hopeful)
• a federal lawmaker who champions hydropower legislation

John Hickenlooper

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper will speak during the opening keynote session on Wednesday, July 24. Hickenlooper calls himself a recovering geologist who once owned a brewpub and was goaded into running for mayor of Denver in 2003. From there, he became governor of Colorado, in 2011, where he and his team are working to promote an all-of-the-above energy policy.

Gary Hart
Gary Hart

Whether or not you recognize this next speaker depends almost entirely on your age, but also a bit on your familiarity with American history. Gary Hart is a former U.S. Senator from Colorado and was a presidential hopeful in 1984 and 1988 before a little "monkey business" helped derail that aspiration. Hart is now a consultant, author and speaker. His most recent book is a fictionalized account of the controversy surrounding development of the Animas-La Plata water project in Colorado. Hart will speak during the closing awards luncheon on Friday, July 26.

Diana DeGette
Diana DeGette

U.S. Representative Diana DeGette, co-sponsor of The Hydropower Regulatory Efficiency Act of 2013, will present a video address during the opening keynote session (Rep. DeGette cannot leave Washington, D.C., because of her legislative calendar.) Rep. DeGette is chief deputy whip and a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. The legislation she champions promtes the growth of small hydro and in- conduit projects by streamlining the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission permitting process for low-impact proposals.

I applaud the tireless persistence of Elizabeth Ingram to secure these speakers. In a recent blog on HydroWorld.com, Elizabeth shared her view that this lineup of political figures will make HydroVision International 2013 "one to remember." I couldn't agree more!

Please consider this my personal invitation to each of you to join us in Denver, Colo., to hear these three speakers … along with 400 hydro professionals from throughout the world who will share their knowledge, experiences, insights, lessons learned and success stories in 70 conference sessions and a three-day poster gallery.
