    DOE resource assessments show significant potential in U.S.

    To capitalize on the remaining hydroelectric potential in the U.S., the Department of Energy's Water Power Program has released a number of reports that assess the following water resources: unpowered dams, run-of-river hydrokinetic power, ocean wave energy and tidal energy.

    According to DOE, development of this potential could contribute up to 2,116 TWh/year of renewable energy, slightly more than half of the nation's annual electricity use.

    Oak Ridge National Laboratory researched the development potential in non-powered dams through the U.S. Researchers found this usable potential to be about 12.1 GW, which could increase the nation's hydropower portfolio by 15%.

    The assessment of run-of-river hydrokinetic resources was compiled and authored by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The report states that the 48 contiguous states and Alaska hold run-of-river potential of 120 TWh/year.

    The wave energy resource assessment was also put together by EPRI, and the data were validated by DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Virginia Tech. Wave energy resources could add 1,780 TWh annually to the nation's renewable portfolio, nearly a third of the nation's total annual electricity usage.

    Finally, Georgia Tech authored the assessment for tidal and stream energy, and DOE used the data to estimate potential for the resource at 250 TWh/year.

    DOE's Water Power program is paving the way for sound investment and policy decisions about the deployment of renewable water power technologies by quantifying the nation's theoretically available water power resources.

    Mead & Hunt announces blog on water, dams and hydropower

    Engineering firm Mead & Hunt has introduced a blog, called Streamline, that addresses water resources infrastructure and dams and hydropower design and development.

    Items the company plans to share at www.meadhunt.com/insights/water include: bulletins from agencies, with background on development standards; interesting projects and solutions relevant to daily business; upcoming events; and ways to connect with Mead & Hunt personnel and other people going through similar experiences.

    Personnel who will blog regularly are Eric Van Deuren, P.E., Rahul Ranade, P.E., and Jeff Anderson, P.E. Van Deuren's specialty is dams and hydropower. Ranade's is flood control infrastructure, and Anderson's is dam safety.

    ASCE releases book on steel penstocks

    The American Society of Civil Engineers announces availability of Steel Penstocks, intended to be a complete guide to the design, installation and maintenance of the closed conduits between a free water surface and hydroelectric stations.

    The 320-page book - known as Manuals of Practice 79 or MOP 79 - is an updated edition that provides recommendations and technical guidance for all aspects of steel penstocks, including tunnel liners, wyes and branch outlets, ASCE says. It also covers the economic, safety and environmental aspects of designing and implementing steel penstocks at hydro stations.

    Topics addressed include: design considerations, including economic diameter, shutoff systems and seismic loads; materials, design criteria and allowable stresses; exposed and buried penstocks; anchor blocks; appurtenances, bends and transitions; corrosion prevention and control; welding; manufacture, installation and inspection; startup; and maintenance.

    The book was prepared by the task committee for the updating of MOP 79.
