Voith wins hydro equipment orders for 111-MW Rasuwaghadi in Nepal, 690-MW Salal in India

Hydropower equipment manufacturer Voith has received orders to equip the 111-MW Rasuwaghadi hydroelectric project in Nepal and to supply six new turbine runners for the 690-MW Salal hydroelectric project in India.

Voith is to supply complete water-to-wire installation for Rasuwaghadi, which is being developed in northern Nepal by Rasuwaghadi Hydropower Co., a subsidiary of state-owned Nepal Electricity Authority. The contract includes three 37-MW vertical Francis turbines, generators, automation systems and balance of plant equipment.

In India, Voith is to modernize six turbines at the Salal project on the Chenab River in Jammu & Kashmir State. India's NHPC Ltd. took bids last year for renovation and modernization of the project. Salal comprises Salal 1 and Salal 2, each of which has three 115-MW vertical shaft Francis turbine-generators.

Voith is to perform supply and service work at Salal for installation of six new turbine runners to be manufactured at Voith Hydro's workshop in Vadodara, India. They are to be delivered individually in order to reconnect the units to India's grid step by step.

Voith said refurbishment of Salal's runners, which were installed between 1987 and 1995, became necessary due to erosion caused by silt-prone waters of Himalayan rivers.

Like Salal, Rasuwaghadi is located in the Himalaya Mountains, which offer 40,000 MW of technically feasible hydropower potential in Nepal alone, of which Voith said only 2 percent has been developed. The company noted India has technically feasible hydro potential of nearly 150,000 MW, of which about one-fourth has been developed.
