U.S. consultant to help boost hydro investment in Georgia republic

Georgia Hydropower

Deloitte Consulting LLP of the United States has received a contract to help implement laws and regulations in the republic of Georgia governing water resources, facilitating investment in hydropower development and promoting energy trading between Georgia and neighboring countries.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) took proposals for the work in March.

Under a US$19.3 million contract, Deloitte Consulting is to provide services under the Governing for Growth in Georgia program to support Georgia's economic governance to improve the business enabling environment and water resources management and to establish an effective electricity trading policy. Work, to be performed through September 2018, is to include home office support, preparation and report writing for technical assistance assignments, conducting studies and tours, and training for beneficiaries.

USAID and Georgia's Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources signed a letter of intent in 2013 to promote private development of new hydropower construction by giving energy producers easier means of selling their power to Turkey and other regional markets.

Georgia has untapped hydroelectric power estimated at 22 terawatt-hours annually. The World Bank approved US$60 million in financing in May to help develop Georgia's hydroelectric sector.
