U.S. awards Lower St. Anthony Falls Dam machinery, control, lighting rehab

Lower St. Anthony Falls Dam

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a contract to BBA Construction LLC to replace central control station electrical equipment at its Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam in Minneapolis.

The Corps' St. Paul District took bids for the work in June.

Under a $415,571 contract, BBA, of Bloomington, Ill., is to remove and replace motor controls, including feeder breakers, motor starters, lighting panels, and relay chasses in the main office: replace dam gate and lock tainter gate limit switches and wiring; furnish and install temporary breaker panels and wiring for temporary power; and provide debug, startup and function test demonstration of installed equipment.

Constructed in 1956 for navigation on the Mississippi River, Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam includes a concrete spillway with four tainter gates. Though having no hydropower, the Corps dam is the location of the 8.98-MW Lower St. Anthony Falls hydroelectric project (No. 12451) licensed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Comission. That project was placed in service in 2011 after delays caused by the collapse of a highway bridge in 2007.
