French firm wins dam safety work at Swiss-French 49-MW Chancy-Pougny hydro project

Chancy-Pougny Hydroelectric Project

Hydro operator Societe de Forces Motrices de Chancy-Pougny SA (SFMCP) has awarded a contract to Freyssinet of Chaponost, France, for seismic reinforcement dam safety work at the 49-MW Chancy-Pougny hydroelectric project on the Rhone River on the border of Switzerland and France.

SFMCP took bids for the work in 2013.

The 10.41 million Swiss franc (US$11.48 million) contract calls for Freyssinet to perform seismic reinforcement of the Chancy-Pougny dam, including reinforcement of pillars by struts and rods, anchoring of a right bank abutment, reinforcement of cables, and concrete repair and reconstruction. The work is to require 34 months.

SFMCP, which is jointly owned by Services Industriels de Geneve of Switzerland and Compagnie Nationale du Rhone of France, took bids in 2009 for civil works and electro-mechanical equipment for fish passage and a 500-kW micro-hydro plant utilizing fish attraction flows at Chancy-Pougny. It previously upgraded Chancy-Pougny to 49 MW from 37 MW.
