Voith Hydro displays new StreamDiver hydro turbine at HydroVision International 2014

Technology and equipment manufacturer Voith Hydro is exhibiting a number of its environmentally-friendly hydropower innovations at HydroVision International 2014, which is currently taking place in Nashville, Tenn.

On display at Nashville's Music City Center is Voith Hydro's new StreamDiver, which is a modular, run-of-river small hydro turbine capable of producing up to 800 kW of power on small streams, canals and other low-head water infrastructure previously not utilized for hydro development.

The company, based in York, Penn., said the StreamDiver also features oil-free lubrication, furthering its commitment to environmental responsibility.

"We've seen tremendous interest in small hydro development across the United States, and HydroVision gives Voith a great opportunity to showcase our extensive technology to meet the needs of hydropower projects both large and small," Voith Hydro president and CEO Kevin Frank said.

The new turbines should appeal to developers looking to capitalize on recent legislation passed by Congress, including the Hydropower Regulatory Efficiency Act and Bureau of Reclamation Small Conduit Hydropower and Rural Jobs Act -- both of which look to streamline the licensing process for some qualifying hydroelectric projects.

Voith Hydro has a long history of working on projects in Nashville and the surrounding area, both with the Tennessee Valley Authority and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

HydroWorld.com reported earlier this month that the company had been awarded a contract to rehabilitate turbine-generator Units 1, 2 and 3 at the 153-MW Center Hill project, which is located near Lancaster, Tenn.

"When we expand clean and efficient hydropower production, we also create good-paying jobs across the United States, including right here in Tennessee," Franks said. "Hydropower is truly a win-win for the country."

Voith Hydro is exhibiting at Booth No. 700 at HydroVision International 2014.
