Alstom wins contract for Finland hydropower project modernization

Harjavalta Hydroelectric Plant

Project operator Lansi-Suomen Voima Oy has awarded a contract to equipment manufacturer Alstom to provide retrofit and upgrade services at its 72-MW Harjavalta hydropower plant in Finland.

The deal, valued at more than US$13.6 million, will see Alstom (LSE: ALO) refurbish and upgrade two generators, rotors, generator shafts and bearings, in addition to supplying new stators, and excitation and cooling systems. Alstom will also supply a new 25 MVA generator to be manufactured at its plant in Bilbao, Spain.

"With this project we will significantly increase the output of the Harjavalta power plant, thus allowing Lansi-Suomen Voima Oy to provide reliable and renewable power to southern Finland," said Markus Alholm, president of Alstom's Finland operation.

Upgrades to the plant's existing generators will increase their output from 2x46 MVA to 2x53 MVA, Alstom said, with the work to be conducted between 2016 and 2017.

"The refurbishment and new machine will allow us to increase the production capacity of the plant and improve the efficiency and environmental safety of the plant," Lansi-Suomen Voima Oy managing director Olli Nummelin said. "We chose Alstom to execute the generator modernization because of their know-how and long experience."

Located along the Kokemaenjoki River, the project was built in 1939. Installation of the facility's current equipment was completed in 1940.

HydroWorld.com reported in May that Alstom had also been awarded contracts to modernize a pair of hydroelectric plants in Switzerland.
