World's first community-owned tidal turbine on line in Scotland

Nova 30 Tidal Turbine

A 30 kW tidal turbine installed in the Bluemull Sound in Shetland is now generating power, making it the world's first community-owned unit to produce electricity.

Developed by Nova Innovation Ltd. in cooperation with the North Yell Development Council, the project was funded via community funding, and grants from the Shetland Islands Council and Community Energy Scotland.

"It will have a positive impact on the North Yell community and economy," Scottish Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism Fergus Ewing said. "Scotland is recognized as a world leader in wave and tidal energy, with a quarter of Europe's tidal stream and a tenth of its wave energy potential."

The Nova Innovation-manufactured turbine, called the "Nova 30", will supply power to up to 30 homes and an icehouse.

HydroWorld.com reported that the Crown Estate had awarded a contract for development of the site in December 2011.
