RWE Innogy commissions 4-MW Maldie small hydropower project

Maldie Small Hydropower Plant

European energy company RWE Innogy has officially inaugurated the 4-MW Maldie small hydropower project in Scotland.

The first of Maldie's two 2 MW Francis turbines was commissioned this past May, though RWE Innody said the second was not put into service until this month.

The German developer said the US$23.15 million Maldie plant marks its first foray into the United Kingdom's hydropower market, but that it is already working on additional small hydro projects -- including Scotland's 3-MW Cia Aig.

"The construction of Maldie was challenging as particular care had to be taken to ensure the hydro scheme would fit in with its surroundings," project manager Mary Drury said. "The powerhouse has been semi-buried and the pipeline and grid cable completely buried to ensure that any construction works blend into the local environment."
