India's 240-MW Uri 2 hydropower plant in full commercial operation

Uri 2 Hydroelectric Plant

The full availability of water has allowed India's National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) to begin full commercial operation of the 240-MW Uri 2 hydropower plant.

NHPC synchronized Units 1 and 3 this past September and Unit 2 in November, though the fourth was not put into operation until earlier this month.

Alstom (LSE: ALO), which manufactured the turbines, said the work was hampered by both limited water availability and difficult terrain.

"Following the successful execution, this project is certainly amongst major references for Alstom Hydro in India," unit managing director Frederic Teyssedou said. "The team overcame the challenges by the project and worked relentlessly to stick to the timelines."

Alstom was awarded the Uri 2 contract by NHPC in 2007 and provided the plant's turbines, generators and auxiliaries.

The project is located in India's northern Jammu and Kashmir state and uses the downstream water discharge of the 480-MW Uri 1.

HydroWorld.com reported this past April that NHPC had hoped to commission the Uri 2 by the end of that month after suffering delays throughout the project's construction.

The Uri 2 is part of Jammu & Kashmir's renewed emphasis on developing its hydroelectric resources, HydroWorld.com reported in June 2012.

According to the state's government, as much as 8,000 MW of hydropower capacity could be developed in the mountainous region in the next decade.
