NYPA selects contractors for work at Niagara hydropower project

The New York Power Authority has awarded a pair of contracts worth US$20 million for work on the company's Niagara hydropower project.

The first contract, worth $19,046,700, was awarded to Ferguson Electric for the installation of auxiliary equipment as part of ongoing upgrades to NYPA's 240-MW Lewiston pumped-storage plant.

The seven-year deal is part of the Lewiston project's 10-year, $460 million Life Extension and Modernization (LEM) program that was approved by NYPA's Board of Trustees in 2010.

Ferguson Electric will install static exciters, generator circuit breakers, cable, conduits, unit instrumentation and AC/DC distribution system equipment to all 12 pump-turbine units at Lewiston.

HydroWorld.com reported that upgrades to the first pump-turbine was completed this past October, with an additional unit to be completed every eight to nine months. NYPA said the work should be complete by 2020.

Ferguson was previously awarded a $5.6 million contract in August 2012 as part of the LEM program.

Quality Inspection Services (QISI) was also awarded a contract during NYPA's most recent board meeting for on-call testing and inspection services of the Niagara plant. The utility said it requires on-call, third-party testing and inspection services to ensure quality assurance during its construction projects. The deal is not to exceed $1.25 million and lasts five years.

"The New York Power Authority remains committed to further strengthening its core generation assets," said Harry Francois, NYPA's regional manager for Western New York. "The auxiliary equipment installations and ongoing operations monitoring covered by these contracts are but two of recent examples. We seek qualified, cost-effective contractors who do excellent work on-time and on-budget."

QISI has previously performed concrete testing and inspection on the dam face at Niagara's Robert Moses power plant, switchyard structure foundation repairs and weld inspections.
