The Philippine Department of Energy has approved a proposal from the Strategic Power Development Corp. for a 200 MW pumped-storage hydropower project in Aklan.

Strategic Power, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the SMC Global Power Corp., said the plant is now in the predevelopment stage.

In addition to Aklan, Strategic Power is also awaiting approval to construct the 20-MW West Upper San Roque and 10-MW East Upper San Roque pumped-storage facilities.

HydroWorld.com reported this past August that SMC had announced a joint venture for the development and operation of the 246-MW Angat hydropower project with the Korean Water Resources Corporation (K-Water).

Meanwhile, the Philippine DOE awarded contracts four small hydropower plants being developed in Negros Occidental by the Basic Energy Corporation in February.
