Canada seeks public comment on Tazi Twe hydroelectric project

Fond du Lac River

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is seeking public comment on the potential environmental effects of the proposed Tazi Twe hydroelectric plant.

The 42- to 50 MW project will be located in Saskatchewan and is being evaluated with public input dictated by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act of 2012, which was instituted to support Canada's Responsible Resource Development Initiative.

The government said this is the third of four opportunities for Canadians to comment on Tazi Twe. Comments must be written and are considered public.

Comments may be submitted by April 27, 2014, to:

Telephone: 780-495-2037

Following the comment period, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency will prepare a draft environmental assessment report, which will include "conclusions and recommendations regarding the potential environmental effects of the project, the proposed mitigation measures, and the significance of any remaining adverse environmental effects."

A subsequent public comment period on the draft environmental assessment report will then be announced at a later date.

Tazi Twe will be located on the Fond du Lac River at Elizabeth Falls. HydroWorld.com reported the project was proposed by the Black lake First Nation in November 2006.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency allocated about US$50,000 to the Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nation to participate in federal environmental assessments of the project this past August.
