Voith Hydro airlifts turbine runner to 4,500-MW Bratsk hydropower plant

Bratsk Voith Hydro Turbine

Voith Hydro has delivered the first of six massive runners to the 4,500-MW Bratsk hydroelectric plant, the global manufacturer announced.

Transported by one of the world's largest aircraft, the Antonov AN124-100, the turbine was manufactured at Voith's factory in St. Polten, Austria.

Voith Hydro said the 73-ton runner was transported via air at the request of the client, Irkutskenergo, "as it considerably shortened the time to installation."

"We had already provided the turbine control device for the Bratsk hydropower plant from 2000 to 2005," said Dr. Leopold Heninger, chairman of the management board of Voith Hydro St. Polten. "With these new runners, we are once again supplying state-of-the-art technology to Bratsk."

The hydropower project was commissioned in 1967 and is located on the Angara River. The plant is home to 18 225-MW turbine generators.

"The new runners perform better and are more effective than the old ones," Heninger said.

HydroWorld.com reported that Voith Hydro received the order from Irkutskenergo in March 2012.
