ABB wins contract to upgrade Hydro-Quebec transmission system

ABB Substation

Power and automation technology group ABB has won a US$60 million order from Hydro-Quebec to replace "vital components" in its ultra-high transmission system.

The Canadian utility uses the system to transport hydroelectric power generated in the province's northern region to the south.

ABB said it will upgrade two Static Var Compensators (SCV) located at Hydro-Quebec's Albanel substation. The upgrades will provide "fast-acting reactive power compensation" for the 735 kV electrical network and should be completed by 2016.

"This upgrade will significantly extend the life of the SVCs and substantially reduce electrical losses," ABB Power Systems division head Claudio Facchin said.

The SVCs are part of ABB's family of "FACTS" (Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems) technologies, which, the company said, "help enhance the capacity and flexibility of power transmission system and contribute to the evolution of smarter grids."

The technology compensates for fluctuations in voltage and current, allowing more power to reach consumers through existing transmission networks, according to ABB.
