Public Power Corporation S.A.-Hellas has synchronized the first unit of its 160-MW Ilarion hydropower plant with the national grid, the Greek utility announced earlier this week.
The plant, located near Kozani, is being designed and constructed Metal Construction of Greece S.A. (METKA). METKA awarded a contract to Alstom Hydro in 2008 for the supply of two turbine units.
Ilarion (also seen as "Ilarionas") is one of three being built in a cascade along the Aliakmon River and represents PPC's third-largest investment, following two gas-powered plants.
The project adds to PPC's fleet of 15 small hydropower projects, operated by subsidiary PPC Renewables S.A.
