  • Dam collapses at India's 4.8-MW Alea hydropower project

    India Flag

A reservoir burst at the 4.8-MW Aleo hydropower project sent thousands of cubic meters of water rushing downstream, though no casualties have been reported.

The reservoir, designed to impound 12,000 cubic meters of water, was being filled as part of a test prior to the hydroelectric plant's commissioning. Reports said the reservoir was about 95% full when the dam burst, raising water levels near Kullu and Bhuntar -- both located downstream along the Beas River.

Officials said the cause of the incident is unknown, but that it represents a "huge loss" in the plant's development.

The Aleo project is being built by Aleo Manali Hydropower Pvt. Ltd., a private company particularly active in India's northern Himachal Pradesh region.
