China's Three Gorges hydropower plant generated a record high 98.1 billion kWh of electricity in 2012.

China Three Gorges Corporation said the 22,500-MW hydroelectric complex increased its power generation volume by 25% year-on-year through 2012, accounting for about 14% of China's total hydro generation.

Three Gorges announced that the last of 32 generating units had been put into service in July 2012, ending almost two decades of work at the project.

HydroWorld.com announced earlier this week that another mega-hydropower project -- Brazil's Itaipu facility -- also recorded a banner output in 2012.
