Alstom tidal turbine reaches milestone at European Marine Energy Centre

Alstom Tidal Turbine

An Alstom tidal device installed at Scotland's European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) has reached a significant milestone having now supplied 100 MWh of electricity into the grid.

Alstom (FR: ALO) said the mark is important in proving the tidal turbine's endurance, while uninterrupted autonomous runs have demonstrated its ability to operate independently.

"These successful milestones with Alstom's tidal turbine are reinforcing our customer's confidence in our technology and in our ability to propose a reliable machine to the market," Said Jacques Jamart, senior vice president of Alstom New Energies.

The tests at EMEC are part of the Reliable Data Acquisition Platform for Tidal (ReDAPT) program, which was commissioned and co-funded by the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI).

The unit reached its full nominal output capacity of 1 MW in July.

The company said testing will continue at Orkney into 2014 before it begins full commercial production. reported in September that Alstom and French utility GDF Suez had signed an agreement allowing for additional research at the Raz Blanchard wave energy form.
