Switzerland's SBB AG awards contract for small hydropower plant overhaul

Massaboden Small Hydropower Project

Gebruder Meier of Switzerland has won a contract worth US$1.61 million to overhaul two generator units at the 7.6-MW Massaboden small hydropower plant.

The project is owned by a unit of Swiss federal railway company SBB AG, which solicited bids for the work in June.

According to the SBB AG Einkauf Infrastruktur Elektroanlagen und Energie tender, Gebruder Meier will refurbish Units 3 and 4 at Massaboden, which was first built in 1899 at Bisch on the Rhone River in Switzerland's Valais canton.

The two 3.8-MW generators have been in service more than 50 years and require replacement of stator windings and examination, replacement, or repair of other components.

The first unit is to be refurbished in winter 2013-2014, with the other to follow in winter 2014-2015. The work is to be performed in parallel with renewal of controls and the safety system, which were advertised in a separate solicitation.
