Queen's University focusing on hydropower project development in remote regions

Support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Resource Council of Canada (NSERC) will allow Queen's University to focus on the engineering challenges associated with hydropower project development in remote northern regions.

The program, called the Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE), is a multi-year initiative that will "address significant scientific challenges associated with Canada's research priorities and facilitate the transition of new researchers from trainees to productive employees in the Canadian workforce," according to the Ontario Waterpower Association (OWA).

OWA entered an agreement with Ontario university's faculty of engineering in October 2012, allowing association members to participate in the CREATE initiative.

"Supporting sustainable engineering in remote areas is of great importance to the waterpower industry," OWA President Paul Norris said. "I am delighted for Queen's University's Department of Civil Engineering and look forward to supporting the students, our members and the sustainable development of new projects."
