Brazil's energy research agency, Empresa de Pesquisa Energetica (EPE), has included 17 hydropower projects in its upcoming A-5 power auction.

Of the dozen large hydroelectric plants that requested inclusion in the August 29 auction, only the 400-MW Sinop project was accepted. The plant -- located in Brazil's Mato Grosso state along the Teles Pires River -- was the only large project to have obtained the preliminary environmental license necessary for auction.

The agency also approved 16 small hydropower projects, which will combine for 376 MW of installed capacity.

EPE said other hydropower projects could qualify to participate in a December 13 A-5 auction if they obtain the required documents.

In all, the upcoming A-5 auction includes 36 projects that will combine for 3.5 GW of new installed capacity. Coal-fired projects make up the bulk of those included in the auction, with biomass in second.

Per A-5 rules, projects purchased in the auction must be operational by August 2018.
