Canada's Kruger Energy partners with developers of Hawaiian small hydro project

Kauai Island

Canadian power company Kruger Energy has partnered with Pacific Light and Power and Orenco Hydropower to develop the 8.6-MW Puu Lua small hydropower project.

Based in Montreal, Kruger Energy was selected due to the company's ability to provide additional financing as well as its past experience in developing hydroelectric plants.

The project will be built on Hawaii state land, using water from the Kokee Ditch irrigation system. Power generated will be provided primarily to a local farmers' cooperative, with the excess being sold to the Kaua'I Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC).

HydroWorld.com reported in June 2012 that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission granted Pacific Light and Power subsidiary Konohiki Hydropower LLC an exemption for what was then projected as being a 5.3 MW project.

Groundbreaking on the Puu Lua project is tentatively scheduled for Spring 2014, though the development group said it must continue coordinating with KIUC, which is also exploring the construction of a hydropower project on the Kokee Ditch system.
