Heywood hydropower plant opening doors for public tours

St. Catharines Hydro Generation Inc. (SCHGI) is welcoming the public to tour its 5.75-MW Heywood hydropower project as part of the Ontario Waterpower Association's 2013 Open Doors campaign.

The Heywood generating station is a two-turbine unit station located on Twelve Mile Creek in St. Catharines. Cofferdam excavation work for the powerhouse began in 1987, and the plant began producing power in March 1989.

The half-hour technical tours will take place between 9 a.m. and noon on Friday, July 12, though attendees must be 18 or older and are required to pre-register by July 2.

"Facility tours provide the public with a unique opportunity to sneak a peek inside some historic gems and some brand new innovative projects," Ontario Waterpower Association President Paul Norris said. "They Heywood station is an outstanding example of a waterpower facility right in the heart of a vibrant community."

For more information or to register, OWA requests that interested parties contact Communications and Public Outreach Coordinator Stephanie Landers via email at slanders@owa.ca, or by calling 866-743-1500.

Heywood is only the most recent Ontario hydroelectric plant to join OWA in opening its doors to help educate the public about the benefits of waterpower as Hydro Ottawa held hosted a similar event at its Chaudiere Falls project earlier this month.
