Voith commissions pair of turbine units at Ecuador's 42-MW Baba

Two Voith Hydro-produced Kaplan turbine units are now in commercial operation at Ecuador's 42-MW Baba hydropower plant.

The Baba facility, operated by utility company Hidroenergetico del Litoral (Hidrolitoral), is part of the Baba Multipurpose Project that also includes the already existing 213-MW Central Marcel de Wind.

Voith said the project is not only intended to help with energy production, but also in regulating the Baba River and improving conditions for agriculture and tourism.

The company said the turbines were the first Kaplan units ever to be installed in Ecuador. In addition to the turbines, Voith also supplied the generator and electrical and mechanical services.

HydroWorld.com reported earlier this month that Voith, along with Alstom, is manufacturing what will become Latin America's largest rotor.
