USSD announces call for papers

The United States Society on Dams has issued a call for papers in anticipation of USSD's 34th Annual Meeting and Conference, which takes place April 7-11, 2014, in San Francisco.

USSD said it invites professionals involved with dams, levees and water resources engineering to submit abstracts of proposed papers. These papers will then be reviewed by the conference's planning committee, with authors of accepted papers being given the opportunity to make a 20-minute oral presentation or exhibit in a poster session.

The association requests that interested parties submit a 200-300 word abstract by June 21, 2013, so USSD can notify accepted authors in August 2013.

More information about the conference and call for papers can be found on USSD's website here.

The theme for the 2014 USSD conference -- "Dams and Extreme Events -- Reducing Risk of Aging Infrastructure Under Extreme Loading Conditions" -- reflects the current state of many of America's 80,000 dams.

According to USSD, more than 75% of all dams in the United States are more than 50 years old, though their importance for irrigation, flood control and energy production have never been higher.
