Uruguay's UTE considering new 70 MW run-of-river project

State-owned power company Administracion Nacional de Usinas y Transmisiones Electricas (UTE) has announced its plan to develop a 70 MW hydroelectric project on Uruguay's Rio Negro, sources report.

The US$170 million run-of-river project would be financed via 20-year private investments, after which ownership of the plant would be passed to the Soriano and Rio Negro department governments.

Officials from both Soriano and Rio Negro are expected to meet in coming weeks to determine whether or not their departments will invest in the project.
