Tamil Nadu considering 2 GW pumped-storage project

Officials are proposing a new 2,000 MW pumped-storage hydropower project for India's southern Tamil Nadu state, HydroWorld.com has learned.

The US$1.3 billion Sillahalla pumped-storage plant is still in the planning stages, according to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco), though the state-owned utility said it will likely float bids for preliminary feasibility studies within the next month.

Tangedco's tentative plan calls for a new dam across the Sillahalla River, with an underground powerhouse to be constructed between the proposed Sillahalla reservoir and existing Pillur reservoir.

Tamil Nadu officials have not specified when work on the project might begin, but said that it will likely take close to a decade to complete.
