The Panama Hydroelectrical Development Company has received an extension from utilities regulator Autoridad Nacional de los Servicios Publicos (Asep) to complete work on the 28-MW Santa Maria hydroelectric project.
Panama Hydroelectrical now has until Oct. 6, 2014, to begin construction, and a subsequent two years to finish the project and have it in commercial operation.
The extension was granted after the group had difficulty securing construction permits from municipal authorities, Asep said.
Santa Maria will be located on the Santa Maria River in Panama's Veraguas province.
HydroWorld.com reported in 2009 that the project's developers had originally planned on beginning construction of the project in 2010.
