GE Power Conversion to help supply Indian pumped-storage project

Bhagirathi River

Alstom has selected GE Power Conversion to provide its variable-speed drive technology for a new 1,000 MW pumped-storage hydropower project being constructed on the Bhagirathi River in the state of Uttarakhand.

Called "Voltage Source Drive technology" by GE Power Conversion (NYSE: GE), the system will be used on all of the pumped-storage plant's variable-speed generators, allowing for power production in both generating and pumping modes.

The variable-speed pumped storage plant will be the first of its kind in India, GE Power Conversion said, and will help provide much needed stability for the country's power grid.

"As we bring our technology to India, one of the world's fastest growing regions for power generation, we are helping to meet the needs for cleaner, efficient and reliable electricity," GE Power Conversion executive Stephan Kramer said. "Because of its efficiency and productivity benefits, variable-speed drive technology is an excellent match for the region's power needs."

The project is being developed by the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation, which awarded a US$412 million contract to Alstom in June 2011 for four 250-MW turbines, outlet valves, and control and protection systems.

"Combined with Alstom's technology, GE's expertise and track record will play a significant role in this first-of-its-kind project to provide solutions for highly efficient power generation," said Alstom Hydro India managing director Frederic Teyssedou.
