French town awards contract for hydropower project operation

The town of Saint-Etienne has awarded BRL Exploitation a contract for monitoring and operation of the Lavalette Dam hydropower project.

Saint-Etienne most recently sought bids for the job in October 2012.

The contract specifies that BRL Exploitation operates the dam, including during floods; monitors and controls proper functions of the minimum flow turbine-generator; monitors and verifies dam safety; and inventories and maintains monitoring equipment.

Terms in the tender said the one-year contract is worth an estimated US$105,000 and that it could be renewed up to three times.

Lavalette Dam was constructed in 1914. Utility company Electricite de France also uses the dam to divert water to its Versilhac and Chaplette hydropower plants.
