Corps awards contract for spillway construction at Folsom Dam

Folsom Dam

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a contract worth US$255.53 million Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. for work at the 198.72-MW Folsom hydropower project.

The Corps' Sacramento District most recently solicited bids for the work in January.

Per the contract, Kiewit Infrastructure West is to construct a new spillway chute and stilling basin on the downstream side of the new spillway, plus an upstream approach channel and cutoff wall to direct water to the control structure.

The job also includes underwater excavation and underwater blasting, and is being conducted as part of Joint Federal Project Phase 4.

The auxiliary spillway is being built to address hydrologic risks identified by the Bureau of Reclamation's Safety of Dams program.

Folsom improvement remains a federal priority, with more than $88 million allocated for risk management and reduction programs in the recently released Fiscal Year 2014 budget.
