Canadian hydroelectric power provider prepares to celebrate 100th year

Orillia Power is celebrating a centennial of operation by hosting a festival for the community, the Canadian utility announced.

Established in 1913 as the "Orillia Water, Light & Power Commission", the company is marking its 100th anniversary on June 15 with a free barbecue, bucket truck rides, face painting, balloon animals, educational displays and more.

"Throughout the hundred years, the name, the corporate structures and the services may have changed, but the commitment to customer service and community support has never wavered," Orillia President Keith McAllister said.

The company operates three hydroelectric power plants, including the 8-MW Swift Rapids, 4-MW Minden and 3-MW Matthias hydropower plants, which were commissioned in 1917, 1935 and 1950, respectively.

"Orillia Power has been and continues to be a leading organization in our industry," Ontario Waterpower Association (OWA) President Paul Norris said. "Their centennial celebration is an excellent example of the reliability and durability of the province's primary source of affordable, renewable energy."

OWA said it is providing an educational booth at the Orillia centennial celebration.
