Senate confirms Jewell as new Secretary of the Interior

Sally Jewell and Barack Obama

Sally Jewell has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the next Secretary of the Interior, having received an 87-11 vote in favor.

Jewell, president and CEO of Seattle-based outdoor company Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI), was nominated by President Barack Obama after Ken Salazar announced his decision to leave the agency in January.

She received bipartisan support from the Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee in March, who said her background in business gives her a unique skillset well-suited for managing competing interests.

"She is able to look through issues with a fresh perspective, a different lens," said Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, who serves as the committee's senior Republican.
