With the International Hydropower Association's 2013 World Congress just a few weeks away, the organization said attendees will be able to learn from practical case studies prepared by IHA's sustainability experts during a number of focus sessions and side meetings.

The biennial event runs May 21-24, 2013, in Sarawak, Malaysia, and includes four days of interactive programs and discussions designed not only to be informative, IHA said, but also to test current strategies and stimulate future thinking.

Specifically highlighted by the IHA are several sessions, including:

  • Risk, Sustainability and International Finance. Does ‘sustainability’ drive economic development or provide an unnecessary burden to less developed economies? Speakers include representatives from: Laos Ministry of Mines and Energy, WWF-US, Lanco International, Third World Centre for Water Management, ANZ Bank and IADB.
  • Working with Project Affected Communities. What are the key ingredients for a socially sustainable hydropower project? Speakers include representatives from: Statkraft, Sarawak Energy, China National Research Centre for Resettlement and the Ministers Department of Malaysia.
  • Informing Decision-Making Using the Hydropower Assessment Protocol. What do different stakeholders think the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol's role will be in the coming years? Speakers include representatives from IFC, GDF Suez Energy Latin America, WWF and AF Consult.
  • Incorporating Sustainability into Business Practices. Can the Protocol be built into existing business sustainability systems? Or are totally new processes required? Speakers include representatives from E.ON, SN Aboitz, Sarawak Energy, IFC and Hydro Tasmania.

A side meeting, called "Introduction to the Hydropower Sustainability Protocol", is also being offered to give participants an opportunity to learn more about sustinability partnerships, training and assessor accreditation.
