  • Chu leaves Department of Energy while Moniz awaits confirmation

    Steven Chu

As of April 22, Steven Chu has served his last day at the Department of Energy (DOE) as its secretary. Chu announced in February that he will return to his post as a professor at Stanford University in California.

Chu is the longest-serving secretary in DOE history, according to reports.

Currently heading up the DOE is Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman, who is now its acting secretary. Ernest Moniz, President Barack Obama's selection to head the DOE on a permanent basis, is in the midst of the confirmation process in the Senate.

Moniz, according to reports, will likely be confirmed before the full Senate following his approval by the U.S. Senate's Energy and Natural Resources Committee earlier this week. The Senate's Energy and Natural Resources Committee confirmed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology physicist in a nearly unanimous vote of 21-1.
