Suweco says Philippines' 8-MW Villaciga 1 hydropower project nearing completion

Construction of the Philippines' 8-MW Villaciga 1 hydroelectric project is progressing as planned and should be completed by June, according to officials with the Sunwest Water and Electric Company (Suweco).

Vallaciga 1 is the first of several Suweco plants being developed on the country's Panay Island, which will ultimately combine for a total installed capacity of about 50 MW.

Suweco said the run-of-river project is more than 80% complete and already has all of its equipment installed. Barring delays caused by weather or transmission line installation, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said it expects Villaciga 1 to be operational by August.

HydroWorld.com reported in January that Suweco is developing the Panay Island projects in response to a call to increase the country's renewable energy supply by the Filipino government.

In August 2012 that the Philippines' National Irrigation Administration and the Japan International Cooperation Agency had signed an agreement hoping to cultivate the country's small hydropower development, while the Filipino Department of Energy announced plans to auction at least 40 prospective mini-hydro sites for exploration and development later that same month.
