Hidrolitoral announces studies for two new hydropower projects

Ecuador Map

Ecuadorian hydropower developer Hidroenergetico del Litoral (Hidrolitoral) will soon begin design studies for a pair of new hydroelectric projects, HydroWorld.com has learned.

Included are the 12-MW Caluma Bajo and 11-MW Rayo 2 hydropower plants, according to the Hidrolitoral's 2013-2015 strategic plan.

The Caluma Bajo would cost an estimated US$32 million and be located on the Bolivar Province's Pita River, while the Rayo 2 would draw from the Toachi Grande River and cost $21 million.

"Preliminary studies are vital to know the total cost of these projects and their technical and environmental viability," the company said.

Hidrolitoral also operates the 45-MW Baba hydro project, which was granted permission for power generation by Consejo Nacional de Electricidad (Conelec) in June 2008.
