Egypt selects Cemex to supply cement for 32 MW Nile hydroelectric project

Assiut Barrage

International cement supplier Cemex has been selected to provide materials for a 32 MW hydropower project on Egypt's Nile River, the company has announced.

The project is being funded by the Egyptian government and is intended to not only increase power availability in Assiut, Minya, Beni Suif, Fayoum and Giza, but also improve irrigation to a landmass of about 1.6 million acres.

Cemex said the project includes a sluiceway with eight 17-meter-wide radial gates, a double-chamber ship, and an 11-meter-tall embankment dam that will be built between 200 and 300 meters downstream of an existing one.

"Cemex is very proud to be a part of this project that will improve the well-being of the people of Egypt for many generations," said Cemex executive Sergio Menendez. "The construction of this massive barrage will allow the people of Egypt to have access to a new clean, renewable energy source."

The project will include four 8 MW bulb turbines, which will be supplied and installed by Andritz Hydro as per a US$137.9 million contract awarded by the Egyptian Ministries of Energy and Water Resources in January 2012.

Construction of the plant is expected for 2017.
