Voith completes training in IHA's environmental management protocol

More than two dozen Voith Hydro employees have completed training in the International Hydropower Association's environmental management program, HydroWorld.com has learned.

IHA's Hydropower Sustainability Protocol covers three pillars of sustainability defined by the organization as the "social, economic and environmental" effects of a project, amongst numerous other factors.

Voith Hydro -- one of the founding members of the Hydro Equipment Association (HEA) -- said it now plans to use the protocol in its partnership with other HEA members.

"This workshop was an excellent opportunity to bring together various stakeholders on hydro power planning and financing together and discuss the use of the protocol as a practical tool to measure and decide upon realization of sustainability in hydropower projects," said Barbara Fischer-Aupperle, Voith Hydro's Head of Sustainability.

IHA said implementation of the protocol within the European Union is supported by Hydro4LIFE, which is a European Commission-funded project under the group's Life+ Environment Policy and Governance Program.
